One of the oldest churches in Yalta was in Autko, a small village in the vicinity of Yalta (later it became part of the city). Since ancient times, the Greeks settled here. In Autkinskoy valley were so many ruins of ancient churches, which it called "pollaklesiya" which means "mnogohramie. Preserved the names of some of the temples built in honor of St. John, Dimitri, Anastasia Paraskeva, Theodore Stratilata.
Assumption Orthodox Christian church was built by the Greeks and consecrated to the memory of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the Church stood on the street of Kirov, 35). The exact date of its construction is unknown, but it is known that the church owned the holy corporal allocated bishop Job (Potemkin) and 26 icons. Near the temple was built two-storey house for the clergy and smashed three fruit garden.
In 1861 his first visit to Livadia Autko visited the temple in the imperial family: the Emperor Alexander II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Maria. new temple could accommodate up to 600-700 parishioners. At donations built a wooden tower. The solemn consecration of the temple took place on Oct. 14, 1866 by Archbishop Alexis (Rzhanitsina), liturgical books in the temple were in Russian and Greek. In 1867, the temple once again visited the imperial family.
In 1888, the tower was rebuilt, it became a three-tier, and built a house for the priest. The church opened a parish school, where he taught Father Sergei Shchukin (1873-1931), a close friend of Anton Chekhov. He himself was a writer, wrote under the pseudonym S. Resurrection.
